Privacy

What this site stores, why it stores it, and how you can stop it. No account, no advertising cookies, and a Friday email you can leave whenever you like.

Laravel Mastery is published from the UK by Half Shell Studios. There is no account to create, and the site does not ask for a name, a password or a payment card. Reading a snippet, an article, a series or the news does not require you to identify yourself.

The Friday email

The form on the home page and on the Friday email page stores the email address you submit, the time you joined, and a private token used only for the unsubscribe link. We keep the address so we can send that Friday email, and we keep it until you leave the list. Every message has an unsubscribe link. Opening it asks you to confirm, and confirming records the time you left. You can join again later with the same address. We do not sell the address, add it to another list, or pass it to anyone else. Mail software can also unsubscribe in one step from the message itself.

Videos and lessons

A consent bar asks before we remember a video or a finished lesson. If you agree, we store, against the IP address of the connection, which videos you have watched, the last position and length of each one, and which lessons in a series you have marked as read. That is how the player can continue, and how a series can show how far through you are, on a later visit from the same connection. The choice itself is kept in a cookie named lm_consent for six months. The cookie is not readable by scripts on the page.

If you choose “No thanks”, that cookie records the refusal and any positions or lessons marked as read for that address are deleted. Choosing “No thanks” does not stop the Friday email. Leaving the Friday email does not delete video or lesson progress. The two are separate.

Until you agree, the player and the lesson list can still update on the page you are looking at. Nothing from that visit is written down for the next one.

Cookies and logs

The site sets the usual cookies a Laravel page needs in order to remember a visit and to reject a forged form submission. Those are not used to follow you around the web.

The site does not use advertising cookies. When analytics is switched on, Google Analytics counts which pages are opened and stores a cookie in your browser. While it is switched off, that tag is not on the page. The host may still record the usual request data, such as an address, a browser and the page that was requested, in its server logs.

A link that leaves the site, including a story that opens on Laravel News, is then governed by that other site.

We remember the videos you watch, where you left off, and which series lessons you mark as read, against this connection’s address. Nothing is stored until you agree.
